History of the Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley is a non-profit, 501(c)3 agency that was established in 1996 by a small group of local citizens. After serving community schools and social service agencies as a “Museum without Walls”, the Museum was generously offered a temporary, lease-free, 3000 sq. ft. facility in April of 1998. Within two years, the City of Bryan had donated a three-story, 15,000 sq. ft. historic building (in need of extensive restoration) to serve as our permanent home. We celebrated the grand opening of the street-level floor of the new Museum site in November of 2001 after raising the $1.1 million necessary to complete Phase I of our capital campaign. In August 2004, we completed renovation of the top floor, providing a large Discovery classroom, a number of conference/ birthday party rooms, and administrative offices. Also in 2004, one of our Discovery Programs, the Storytelling Guild/Storytelling Camp, won the prestigious MetLife Foundation/ Association of Children’s Museums “Promising Practices Award”.

Today, the Museum is a well-respected institution that serves more than 40,000 visitors each year. The board and staff of the Museum are committed to providing interactive exhibits and educational programs that challenge our youth to ask questions and fully engage their minds in the learning process. An integral part of downtown Bryan, we continue to build and develop strong collaborations with local school districts, Texas A&M University, and many community service organizations that are committed to enriching the lives of children and families of the Brazos Valley. These collaborations multiply the impact of gifts given to the Museum because we are able to reach a greater percentage of children and youth in our community.
